Rating 1 out of 5 - Good Story/Good Cast negated by a Lousy director
A good director with a good cast can take even a bad story and make a decent film. This movie had a wonderful cast and the story was original. This movie was marketed as a scifi thriller and I believe the screenplay was probably good. The first thirty minutes of the movie lived up to its expectations. However the movie quickly degenerated into a B slasher movie courtesy of Director Danny Boyle. Danny Boyle took what could have been a good movie and ruined it. Despite his critical acclaim he has never done anything original. 28 Days Later and its sequel were just variations of dawn of the dead. This movie is no different. It is almost exactly like the 1997 movie "Event Horizon". This movie would have been so much better without the shaky camera angles and extreme close ups that made the action sequences impossible to follow. A good director can build suspense and thrill you without using hokey camera tricks and gore. Put this one in the category of "Had great potential" and dont waste your time.

Rating 1 out of 5 - It's all dark
I am a sci-fi fan myself - I read sci-fi books, subscribe on and off to a sci-fi magazine and watch sci-fi movies. I would happily tolerate something that's less than a masterpiece if I could find just a little bit of that something that makes sci-fi such a great form of expression: imagination, out-of-the-box thinking, daring to provoke, wonder at the infinity that's surrounding us, the passion to explore. I can't say that I found much of that in 'Sunshine'.

The premises are impossible to sustain: the Sun goes colder in the relatively near future but it is possible to re-ignite the Sun by throwing some really large nuclear-bomb-like thingy at it (keep in mind that the Sun throws out at us the energy equivalent to billions of nukes every single second). The movie is showing those who volunteered to nuke the Sun on their journey to save the Earth as we know it. Not everything goes as expected, everyone dies but, in the end, the Sun shines again. End of story.

I found this movie difficult, in fact painful to watch. I suppose that there is some message, somewhere - like... nothing lasts forever and we and everything ours and everything else are all going to die sooner or later - but the way the message (not exactly news) is delivered lacks originality and even credibility - because of the outrageous premises noted above, the not so inspired script and of some unconvincing acting.

Not recommended for a rental. Avoid it. My personal rating: 'awful'.

Rating 2 out of 5 - Why Bad Things Happen to Good Films
I was enjoying this film up until the last 20 minutes or so. We have an enjoyable , intelligent science fiction space drama with some real moments of suspense as the gallant crew attempts to complete their mission of "re-igniting" the dying Sun, when ... WHAM!...out of left field comes this inane, confusing slasher flic finale. What a bummer! It's like the director took ill before the film was finished and handed over the end to his insane nephew who had his own vision of what the film should be.
A real waste of time, folks. File this under "When Good Films Go Bad"

Rating 4 out of 5 - very well done film
All though I rarely comment on a film I feel that this one requires it. As a viewer of many Sci Fi films and that includes the first showing of " the earth stood still". I believe that as an amature (can't spell) movie goer This film provides what intelligent movies demand. It is not a quick CGI ridden film but one that demands the attention of the viewer. In an age where most Sci Fi films depend on special effects and/or
CGI because they have little to tell, this film will demand of the viewer to think. It may not be the best film but it is very close to being a really good film.
