Rating - Functional, not pretty
I have a couple of these feeders, but I don't plan to buy any more of them. They work OK, but to my eye, they are just plumb ugly. In addition, over the course of a year or two in the sun, the bright red plastic fades to a faint pink color (see my photo, above), which is a problem because bright red is the color that draws hummingbirds. As you can see in my "War of the Hummingbirds" video on YouTube, I keep about 25 hummingbird feeders filled during our fall migration season.
My favorite is Perky Pet's model 209 "Our Best," which Amazon also sells. Perky Pet 209 "Our Best" Hummingbird Feeder, 30 oz capacity It's the same capacity, just as sturdy, easier to clean, and the plastic stays bright red. They're also a little less expensive. I think they're also a whole lot better looking.
Rating - What You See Is Not What You Get
The picture shows the newer single rail version. What I got in June 08 was the older version that I felt compelled to modify. Pictures should accurately represent what is purchased. Seller never responded to my inquiry. That said the feeder is fine after the mods.
Rating - works OK, but won't be my top choice from now on.
I have a smaller version of this (16oz?). It's OK. Problems:
-After one summer, the red base has faded considerably. It's on its 2nd summer now.
-The metal band around the top slipped off once when I was hanging the feeder up. I've never been able to get it back on tight enough, so it still falls off every now and then (generally when being hung/unhung).
-Because of the above, there has been some damage to the little perch part of the plastic bottom as well as part of the plastic where the bottle screws in. Some pieces have broken off. Still works though.
-Lots of nooks and crannies to clean! You definitely need a bottle brush and something with some good bristles.
-As others have mentioned, apparently there is a possible safety problem with the angle/type of the feeding holes. I haven't altered them and haven't seen any problems. I'll probably fix them after this season though.
-Ants do get in.
But all in all, it's a fine feeder. Doesn't leak, and the glass bottle is nice. So...mediocre. I recommend the Oasis feeder at the moment over this one.
Rating - Worth the Cost of Shipping!
For several years I have used a much smaller "Best-1" hummingbird feeder with tremendous success. This summer I have had so many hummingbirds that I couldn't keep my feeder full for even a day!
The 32 ounce size is wonderful! I'm happy, the birds are happy, and I only have to refill it every four days! I love the glass bottle because I
can sanitize it with boiling water.
The feeder was expensive to ship, but it arrived in just a couple of days, and was carefully packed. Save yourself some time and buy this feeder!
