Rating - Star Trek the Orginal Series: The Final Season
Owning the entire three season set of the original Star Trek is obviously a must for serious Star Trek fans. The third season is the most uneven season of the three in terms of quality episodes in both writing and special affects. The show's budget was cut in the third season so they truly were working on a shoestring budget. Season three does have some of the best episodes but it also has some of the worst.
My favorite episodes in Season Three are:
-The Enterprise Incident, an excellently written and acted spy/mystery thriller involving the Romulans.
-The Paradise Syndrome where Kirk loses his memory on a planet threatened by an asteroid and winds up living with the indigenous population with a culture similar to Native Americans.
-Specter of the Gun where we see a replay of the OK Corral gunfight was a lot of fun, if a bit of a stretch.
-Elaan of Troyius where Kirk ends up taking over the tutoring of a spoiled princess is also quite fun.
Season three also contains one of the most poorly written episodes - Requiem for Methuselah - one where Kirk is completely out of character. It's an abomination that it ever aired.
The specials features on the Season Three set are excellent. It includes the original Star Trek pilot The Cage featuring captain Christopher Pike. It also has some well done interviews and profiles of George Takei (Sulu), Walter Koenig (Chekhov), and John Doohan (Scotty).

This has to be the most halarius season of star trek ever made. The box is especially interesting and the cover shows you some of the hoeky costumes and stuff that is in store. some of my favorite trends are those triangular shaped sideburns that everyone in the future has including the women. I also like the klingon whith the douoble go t beard in "Elaan or troyius", Im sure that set a fashion statement for years to come. One thing I should note is the evident low budget fillming apparent in "the enterprise incident" in the middle half of this episode if you pay attention to the romulan commander when she has her back to the camera it becomes apparent that the costume she wears dosent fit quite right. Perhaps the most interesting episode is the "savage curtain" which has abraham lincoln as a guest star. Almost as interesting as that episode has to be "spock's brain" which is the first episode they show you. This episode sets the trend of people going crazy, a barbaric fight, and the doctor acting like hes in charge of everything while at the same time he is incompetent and has someone else do all the work (especially the nurse) in every episode. "The tholian web" is also priceless when spock says that everyone has to accept the captains death and half the crew goes insane and starts a massive rucus. If you can only afford one season get this one it represents everything you could possibly want in star trek.
Rating - An American classic...!
Nominated for four Emmys, including Outstanding Dramatic Series two times in its short three-year stint, Star Trek is a true legend of television history. The brainchild of former L.A. policeman Gene Roddenberry, the show premiered in Fall 1966 only to be cancelled after three seasons due to lackluster ratings. But it may well have been NBC's network executives who were the cause of the low ratings as they allotted a less than desirable time slot for the show. When Star Trek moved into syndication, its reruns captured the science-fiction imagination of an entirely new audience, catapulting the Star Trek franchise to new heights. Its newfound popularity would, in the decades to come, spawn novels, comic books, six full-length feature films, and reams of merchandise as fans clamored for anything Star Trek-related. Beginning in the 1980's, spin-offs of the show began to appear such as Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise...
Star Trek, the original TV series, follows the adventurous exploits of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise as they "boldly go where no man has gone before..." The spaceship Enterprise is led by Captain James Tiberius Kirk (William Shatner), an Earth-born astronaut who often exhibits the charm, leadership, and creativity necessary for the mission's survival. Kirk is joined by Lt. Commander Spock (Leonard Nimoy), a Vulcan-born retired commander and theoretical scientist. Chief medical officer Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) rounds out the main cast of Star Trek which includes a plethora of supporting crew with multiple guest appearances and cameo roles. Together, the crew of U.S.S. Enterprise seeks to carry out its mission: "to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations..." It's this pioneering attitude, coupled with imaginative sci-fi worlds, that provides Star Trek with its nostalgic allure - especially these episodes from the original TV series, widely regarded as the most popular of all the TV series...
The Star Trek (Season 3) DVD features a number of action-packed episodes including the season premiere "Spock's Brain" in which the Enterprise is intercepted by a mysterious, unidentified spacecraft. An alien from the ship beams herself onto the bridge of the Enterprise and renders the entire crew unconscious. When they awaken, McCoy informs Kirk that the alien has confiscated Spock's brain. Now, the Enterprise is tasked with locating Spock's brain before his body decays... Other notable episodes from Season 3 include "Plato's Stepchildren" in which the inhabitants of the planet Platonius take advantage of the Enterprise crew's goodwill in order to enslave them via telekinesis, and "The Way to Eden" in which the Enterprise is hijacked by a band of Earthlings in pursuit of the mythical planet Eden, a garden-like world of health, purity, and happiness...

The DVD Report
Rating - KEEPS NEWLYWEDS HAPPY!
My new wife and I giggle and laugh whenever either one of us says, "It looks like a Star Trek night". That's when we snuggle up in bed, pop in one of these DVD's and watch 'em until we fall asleep. It's a lot of fun and is our little special joke we have. *THIS SET IS GREAT! I bought it for her for Christmas and I thought I may have went overboard paying $100 for it, but it was well worth it. Lots of shows, the "preview for next weeks episode" is fun and completely original, and the menu is lots of fun with the noises and view of the bridge. The only thing I wasn't enthused about was the contents of the package. The outside casing is cool (impossible to get into a disk organizer), but once you pry open the case, there's nothing but the disks and a wimpy lil piece of paper in front. With a series as popular and sought after as Star Trek, I would have thought they might put a decent booklet with some tidbits and facts or secrets or something in it. Anyway, it's still * * * * * (5 stars)
