Rating - High Cost, Low Return
This is quite possibly the most over-hyped brand of vacuum cleaners out there. I have had this model for a bit over two years. Mostly it has just sat in the closet which is where I can attest to its having a worthy design for compactness. My cleaning lady hates it and prefers to use just a damp mop on all of the floors. I can understand her reasoning. Just to get it out of the closet, unfurl hoses, detach and extend wands is so time consuming. After you get it set up and ready to use, it offers no better than average suction, and the rotating brush head is absurdly designed as indicated in so many other reviews. If it so much as taps a piece of furniture or woodwork, the rotating brushes disengage and you must bend down and tug at this poorly designed "knob".
The machine, while sleek looking, still manages to tip over and get snagged on corners of furniture with alarming frequency.
So after two years, and having been used probably less than 15 times, it has broken off one polycarbonate piece which secures the lid to the dust bin. Dyson will sell me the part for 39.99. Not just the part I actually need, but the entire assembly. Just today, my cleaning lady having it off, I hauled out the Dyson to vacuum up after Thanksgiving lunch, all was well until I went to retract the power cord. Now that is broken. I've found the assembly for sale on Sears Parts website, over $50.00.
On top of it all, this vacuum is screwed together with some odd unconventional type of screws that one must buy special tools to work on.
Save your money, buy a Hoover.
Rating - Don't even want one for free.
A DC11 was offered to me gratis, so I gave it a whirl. I'd hoped the carpet head would work better than my Miele's, which is also air powered, but the Dyson just wouldn't pick up the stuff it was flicking up. The turbohead is see-through, so I could see small objects (a tiny piece of gravel, actually) spinning around and around. I kept having to turn the machine off because the button on the side of the turbohead that automatically switches for hard floor surfaces kept self-depressing and then the gravel would fall back down onto the carpet.
Most of the dirt flung sideways, which the exhaust vent then blew all over the room. BTW, the machine vents a LOT of heat. The button that automatically switches for hard floor surfaces kept self-depressing, due to the aforementioned dirt collecting and clogging the screen on it. Pulling it out manually doesn't help. You have to clean the screen, which means detaching the wand.
Speaking of which, even after hearing audible clicks, the wand kept collapsing and pinching my hand. The suction is better with the wand collapsed, which makes it too short to use.
On hard floors, it did OK. I'd rather spend a small fortune on a new Miele than take the DC11 for free.
Rating - BUY THIS VACUUM
Although this might seem pricey, it's worth every cent. The first time it was used the canister was filled from one room. That's how much filth was left by it's predacessor which cost about half of the Dyson. Had to buy bags too. I'm not a young man but I actually use this vac and I'm married. That says alot because i'm basicaly lazy. Buy it, you won't regret it. If you're not satisisfied I'll double your money (just kidding).
Rating - Avoid this machine, its attraction is pure marketing
We have owned this vacuum for about a year and a half and are completely frustrated by it.
First of all, it DOES have a filter, and it is small and clogs quickly. Once the filter clogs you have to remove it, wash it, AND LET IT DRY before using it again.
The power head is air powered and very fussy, it won't work with the filter clogged, or if the small air diverter to the powerhead turbo fan gets even partially clogged, which it does all the time.
Animal hair clogs the bearings of the powerhead brush frequently. This then requires you disassemble the powerhead and pick away at the hair on the shaft of the brush assembly.
It is not good for picking up larger particles such as small wood chips, small stones, since they tend to damage the bagless portion of the vacuum.
It is almost entirely plastic, so even though the design is ultra-modern and interesting, the durability is less than desireable.
It has a short power cord.
It is nice to be able to pack it up an put it away in a small closet, but takes a few minutes to do, so it rarely gets done, we just put it away like any other vacuum.
When emptying the baggless chamber, you really have to go outside because a lot of dust billows up when being dumped. You almost need to devote a plastic trash bag to carefully dump it into, each time you empty it to avoid making a huge mess, and being exposed to all that dust and debris. And this really defeats the environmental benefits of it.
This machine is really a marketing genius, but really not a mechanical genius.
