Rating - finding out what your model two can really sound like
after buying the Model Two system, i followed the advice in some earlier reviews and used it 'standalone' for several weeks to familiarize myself with the sound. as reported, the sound quality is quite good and the bass response seems to be tuned up in the manufacturing process for added emphasis.
adding the subwoofer has filled out the sound, giving a rich dimension that wasn't there before. more warmth, eliminating any sense of "left-right" displacement, a new balance and synergy. the subwoofer unifies the satellite speakers and completes the sound profile coming out through the room. it is very hard now to isolate any single unit in the triad, what i hear is magnificent sound.
as reported, this is not a car stereo subwoofer. it won't make the room bounce no matter how high you turn it up. what it does is subtle yet at the same time critical -- you'll never know how good the Model Two can sound until you add the subwoofer.
a couple final notes: placement is important, follow the manual and put it low on the floor. it doesn't have to be centered between the satellites but that seems to work best. i live in an old house with a family below and the floors transmit sound easily . . . they don't hear this but i certainly do. there's a real elegance in the way this unit has been engineered, and it works and is worth the money even if it's not on sale.
Rating - A must addition for Model 2
I have the model 2 with the CD player. The sound is great except at the low end. The addition of this subwoofer completely fixed the problem. As other reviewers pointed out, it does not shake the floor, which i don't like anyway, but the bass is accurate and makes a huge difference for almost any kind of music I listen to.
Rating - Not much woof for the buck
Perhaps I'm biased because I also have owned a Bose system with two tweeters and a very profound subwoofer effect from a very large woofer. What doesn't help in the Tivoli system is that the Tivoli speakers, in general, have exaggerated bass response to them. They are very "boomy" little speaker enclosures. So, when I hooked up the auxiliary subwoofer to my Tivoli Satellite stereo set, I wasn't sure it was even working. Turning the bass knob up to the max adds little to the overall effect (other than a "boom" when you turn the set off and on). They recommend that the subwoofer be placed on the floor, but even that doesn't add much. To be fair, my choice of music is classical, so I'm sure that In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida might be more impressive with this subwoofer. For what I listen to, one would be very hard pressed to tell, blindfolded, if the subwoofer was on or off. There's already too much woof in the Tivoli system to merit spending another $80 to add an imperceptible amount of woof at your feet.
Rating - Subwoofer does improve base sound
For a small system like the Tivoli radio/cd, it does make a positive difference. Radio system sounds good by itself, but by adding the subwoofer it enhances the experience by adding to the richness of the base and low notes.
