- The Planets - a study of the solar system
The Planets is a 1999 BBC documentary encompassing early developments in the space race through to the likely demise of the solar system as the sun devours all the planets in it's final death throws. Superbly narrated by Samuel West and featuring state-of-the-art computer effects, interviews with space explorations leading players this is the most stunning documentary on the solar system you will ever see. The most captivating feature of the film is the unbridled enthusiam of the scientists interviewed that almost makes you wish you were up there with spacecraft like Voyagers 1 and 2 as they gathered previously unseen views of the gas giants. Carl Sagan reflects upon one of the last photos taken by Voyager - a panorama of the solar system in which Earth is no larger than a pixel in diameter ...."and this is were we live," he says, "on this tiny blue dot.Makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.
Space Documentaries don't get any better than "The Planets".
